Rapper Bo$$, whose real name was Lichelle Marie Laws has tragically died at the age of 54.
The music star was the first female rapper signed by Russell Simmons to Def Jam. Her tragic death was announced on Instagram by Bun B who called his dear friend “one of the best female MCs.”
Rapper Bo$$ passes away two decades after being told she ‘wouldn’t make it’
The cause of death of the Detroit-born artist has not yet been revealed. However, she had been struggling with her health for almost three decades.
In 2011, the rapper was diagnosed with renal disease, as she made the public aware she was in need of a new kidney.
Six years later, the music star suffered a stroke and a seizure. A GoFundMe account was set up on her behalf, as it was believed she needed a new kidney.
However, her problems with her kidneys started back in 1999, when the MC revealed she was on dialysis for three and a half years.
“Every complication that you have with it [bad kidneys] I had it,” Lichelle told Metro Times in 2004. “They told my mama I wouldn’t live past Thursday. And I was down. I was cussin’ b****** out in the damn hospital.”
The artist, who dropped her first and only studio album, Born Gangstaz in 1993, found huge success with the debut record, reaching number three on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Tributes pour in from fellow artists
As Bun B announced the tragic news on Instagram, tributes came pouring in from fellow rap artists. Alongside a picture of the Deeper star, he wrote: “Rest in peace to my big sis Lichelle Laws AKA Boss. One of the best female MCs and a dear friend. Give Rick Royal a hug for me. Long Live The Org!”
“She was too cold!!!! Wow,” commented Lloyd Banks.
“She fought a good fight for a long time. May she rest in eternal love and peace,” penned Willie D.
One fan wrote: “Boss was the s***! Female eazy E /doc. Glad I got to grow up in a time where people were really free to express themselves.”
